What is Remedial Massage?

Remedial massage is a hands-on modality that aims to improve and aid in the repair of musculoskeletal aches and pains, injuries and postural imbalances caused by tension in the muscles or other soft tissue components such as fascia, tendons and ligaments.

Remedial massage therapy has the ability to restore the body’s own healing potential by balancing soft tissue length, reducing tension and improving our body’s ability to heal by enhancing nutrient delivery to the affected site and removing waste products (i.e. damaged cells and scar tissue) via the blood and lymphatic system.

The SHG remedial massage therapists use postural analysis together with muscle and joint assessment and examination to effectively determine where tension and/or imbalances lie within the muscular system. Using deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, myo-fascial release, muscle energy and other specialised techniques, pain can be eliminated, damage can be restored and movement quality enhanced, thus supporting and speeding up the body’s own repair mechanisms.

As daily postures and repetitive movements can cause constant undue stress on the body, remedial massage can assist to help people feel and perform better. Regular remedial massage therapy treatments can enhance physical performance and eliminate pain for athletes whose muscles and tendons may becoming stiff, overused and immobilised due to repetitive trauma caused by the demands of their sport. Remedial massage will also improve posture, performance and fatigue levels to those that spend their days in sustained positions, such as being seated in an office chair or continuous physical labour.

With constant demands of busy life styles and increased stresses, whether work or family life, remedial massage can also play an important role in stress relief both emotionally and physically. Stress can be held through muscle tension within the body impacting on sleep, body function and the ability to relax. Through regular remedial massage these tensions can be eliminated and stress levels reduced, improving vitality and well-being.

What is Myotheraphy?

Myotherapists are soft tissue specialists. The soft tissue of the body refers to muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. Myotherapists will assess and treat pain and dysfunction in the body based on the effect these tissues have on patients presenting concerns or injuries; and also the effect that these presenting concerns or injuries may have on the soft tissue.

Treatment is directed towards the tissue structures to ensure that muscle quality is maintained to allow for optimal movement and function while aiding in pain relief and correcting body dysfunction which may be preventing the recovery of an injury. Myotherapy treatment can be effective at any stage of a concern or injury, be it corrective, rehabilitative, or preventative.

To determine the cause of the injury and implement an appropriate treatment protocol, our myotherapist will assess your medical history, review any pervious medical reports and discuss with you possible recreational or occupational factors that may be influencing the presenting injury or concern.

A myotherapist will also undertake a physical assessment, which may involve orthopaedic testing, gait analysis and postural assessment to gain a greater understanding of the bio-mechanics of your body to determine if there are any underlying movement dysfunctions which may be causing or contributing to the injury.

Myotherapy can be extremely beneficial for improving physical performance and mobility.

Physical strain on the body through heavy lifting, repetitive movements or athletes pushing their bodies to limits of power, speed and endurance will ultimately take its toll on the body. These demands can cause trauma to the tissue, which can result in inflammation leading to a loss of pliability in the muscular and fascial system causing tightness, restriction of movement, stiff joints, deep muscular pains, aching muscles, poor recovery and increased time needed for warm-up.

Myotherapists will use a variety of techniques to achieve a desired outcome. Individual myotherapists may have a preferences for certain techniques based on their own experience and proven results. Techniques may be, but are not limited to: trigger point therapy, fascial release, joint mobilisation, dry needling, muscle energy techniques, deep tissue massage, cupping, corrective exercises, hot stone therapy and movement retraining.

Our myotherapists are qualified to treat the following conditions: chronic lower and upper back pain, headaches/migraines, repetitive strain injury (RSI), joint pain, forearm pain (i.e tennis/golfers elbow), knee pain, lower leg pain (achilles tendonitis), shin splints, frozen shoulder, hip and groin pain, knee injuries, rotator cuff injuries and general muscular tightness and stiffness.
